Is a Medicare Supplement Plan for You?
As an Individual Market Consultant specializing in senior services, I’m often asked about the differences between Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans. One thing that eligible members need to be aware of is that Original Medicare may not cover everything.
Medicare Supplement Plan Highlights
Below are some important points about Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans:
- Help cover some or all medical expenses not paid by Original Medicare, Parts A & B.
- May help limit your annual out-of-pocket medical expenses.
- Do not require a referral to see a specialist.
There are some additional features available with a supplement plan:
Choice of Providers There is no network, so you can go to any provider throughout the United States that accepts Medicare patients. Consequently, you won't have to worry about receiving care while traveling in the U.S. or having to switch doctors.
Guaranteed Renewable Your insurance carrier does not have the option to cancel coverage or increase premiums based on your medical history, current health conditions or the number of claims filed. As long as premiums are paid, the policy remains active. Premiums are, however, subject to change based on your current insurance provider.
Can be Combined with a Part D (Prescription Drug) Plan You can add Medicare prescription drug coverage to Medicare Parts A and B, as well as Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, to help keep medication costs under control.
